Some 1500 miles off the East coast of Africa lies the stunningly beautiful island of Mauritius. Formed over 8 million years ago as a result of volcanic activity, this small island boasts long stretches of dazzling white sandy beaches, tranquil lagoons, a magnificent mountainous interior and a coral reef spanning the entirety of its coastline. Situated just south of the equator, Mauritius is an all year round destination with a tropical summer (November to April - Average coastal temperature of 29ºC) and a subtropical winter (May to October -average coastal temperature 24ºC). The driest months are between May and November. The island is a twelve hour direct flight from Britain, and is four hours ahead of GMT.
The capital, Port Louis, is a fascinating melting pot of everything Mauritian. A trip there is not to be missed. Marvel at the Dutch, British and French inspired colonial architecture. Take a trip to the Natural History Museum to see the famously extinct Dodo bird. Wander through the fascinating Chinese quarter or take a tour of the fabulous Pamplemousse botanical gardens. However, the highlight must surely be the market situated near the mosque. A fantastic spectacle awaits those who manage to be present mid-morning: a combination of coloured saris, tempting aromas, flashing earrings, Chinese smiles and Creole exuberance, vast vegetable baskets, shining cookware and luscious fruits.
