Maldives Shark Sanctuary
11.03.2010

It was announced this week that the waters surrounding the island paradise of the Maldives is to be made into a shark sanctuary.

The Maldives are not just renowned for luxury holidays but with over 30 species of sharks living in its warm waters it is a divers dream. Shark tourism contributes to a large part of the Maldives economy. “The Maldives were one of the first countries to recognise that sharks are a key reason tourists went to dive there”.

With many shark species under threat of extinction due to overfishing for their fins, mainly for shark fin soup, the Maldivian government have created a shark sanctuary making it illegal to fish for sharks. So it looks like divers who enjoy exploring the lagoons and reefs surrounding this stunning island, in search of sharks, won’t be disappointed.
