Travel Marketing Awards
17.03.2010

At the Travel Market Awards this week the top marketing award in travel went to Tourism Queensland, with their “best job in the world” marketing ploy.

In January 2009 travel officials in Australia took the unusual step of advertising “the best job in the world” globally. The successful applicant would live on the tropical island of Hamilton Island for six months for a salary of £75,000.

The winning applicant was Brit Ben Southall. His job required him to keep a daily blog and take photographs promoting the island. He also had to feed the many species of fish that live in the surrounding waters and collect the islands post.

Tourism chief hoped to attract more tourists to Australia’s Whitsunday Islands, which has long been regarded as a destination for luxury holidays. The marketing exercise was a success and at the end of 6 months Ben has been given a further contract to continue promoting the state of Queensland around the world and he is also writing a book about his experiences.
