Sharks - A Precious Maldivian Resource

One of the most popular activities for those enjoying luxury holidays in the Maldives is diving. The waters around the islands are incredibly clear due to the lack of sediment being washed into them from large rivers or stirred up around rocky coasts, creating a perfect opportunity to spot some of our planet’s most beautiful and impressive aquatic plant and animal life.
The reefs are the obvious example of great diving scenery as there is an abundance of small fish and corals that are simply magnificent to behold. However, one of the more unique opportunities that Maldives presents is a chance to go diving to spot a variety of sharks.
You might find that the sharks also have a habit of ending up in soups or as steaks, but this is definitely a case where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Not only is shark diving an invigorating and life-affirming experience but the money that shark dives bring to the islands is a huge boon for the inhabitants. Studies in both Maldives and at other locations around the world where shark diving is common have shown that the money a single shark brings into the economy through diving far outweighs the money it does when killed and sold.
This is just another great example of how the Maldives allow you to experience a world almost apart from our own, where amazing things can and do happen on every trip.
