How to Get Around in the Maldives
25.05.2011

As a country, the Republic of Maldives is made up of 1,192 islands, of which only 185 are inhabited. The rest are either completely bare of human presence or house resorts or other tourism-focussed structures.

So, in a country in which the sea makes up more than 80% of the surface area, how do you go about getting from the airport to your accommodation? Or between any of the islands you might want to visit? The answers are as luxurious and exciting as the destination.

The speediest way to travel on your luxury holiday to Maldives is by sea plane. Not only will these air taxis (as their known in the Maldives) get you to your destination faster than any of the sea-based transports, but you’ll have a great view of the various islands and the clear ocean. The planes are small, generally only able to take up to ten passengers, and they might not be for everybody, but they certainly are a dramatic way to travel.

The next option is simply by boat, which is the standard and not a particularly fast method. You’ll get to see the islands but your journey may be long and, if you could possibly get bored of the views or the magic of the Maldives, dull.

If you’d still like to travel by water but want to do so more stylishly than by a normal boat then private yachts are the answer. It still won’t get you there faster than a sea plane but you’ll have a much more comfortable ride than either of the other transport options offer you.
