Mauritius
Some 1500 miles off the East coast of Africa lies the stunningly beautiful island of Mauritius. Formed over 8 million years ago as a result of volcanic activity, this small island boasts long stretches of dazzling white sandy beaches, tranquil lagoons, a magnificent mountainous interior and a coral reef spanning the entirety of its coastline. The island forms part of the Mascarene Archipelago; all that now remains of the ancient land mass that once united the great continents of Asia and Africa.
Situated just south of the equator, Mauritius is an all year round destination with a tropical summer (November to April - Average coastal temperature of 29ºC) and a subtropical winter (May to October -average coastal temperature 24ºC). The driest months are between May and November. The island is a twelve hour direct flight from Britain, and is four hours ahead of GMT.
The capital, Port Louis, is a fascinating melting pot of everything Mauritian. A trip there is not to be missed. Marvel at the Dutch, British and French inspired colonial architecture. Take a trip to the Natural History Museum to see the famously extinct Dodo bird. Wander through the fascinating Chinese quarter or take a tour of the fabulous Pamplemousse botanical gardens. However, the highlight must surely be the market situated near the mosque. A fantastic spectacle awaits those who manage to be present mid-morning: a combination of coloured saris, tempting aromas, flashing earrings, Chinese smiles and Creole exuberance, vast vegetable baskets, shining cookware and luscious fruits.
The natural beauty, heritage, culture and people of the island go some way to explaining why Mauritius makes such a special destination; but it is only half the story. The island is home to some of the most luxurious and spectacular hotels in the world, all of which provide a service which is second to none. Gourmet cuisine abounds, reflecting the cultural diversity of Mauritius. Dine on food (al fresco of course!) prepared by world renowned chefs whilst listening to the rhythms of live local music. Take advantage of the superb water sport facilities on offer, put your swing to the test on the championship golf course, or pamper yourself at the resort spas. Everything you need to enjoy a luxury holiday is here on this island, captured by resorts such as Le Touessrok and Le Saint Geran.
