Little Good Harbour, set in an old fort and in pretty gingerbread cottages north of Speightstown, is a delightful, small Barbados hotel which has one of the island’s loveliest restaurants, the Fish Pot. The hotel, although situated close to the big hotels of the west coast remains low key and remarkably unpretentious in its hidden away location on a pretty little beach (shared with a Bajan fishing village) whilst still epitomising barefoot, understated luxury and unsurpassed service.

This is an extremely laid-back property, ideal for hiding oneself away, though the location also brings a feeling of connection with local Bajan life that is perhaps missing from the other hotels in the area. The Friday night fish fry is certainly a fun event to take part in.

Little Good Harbour has its own distinctively Caribbean style and charm. A number of the rooms are set in a series of cottages which retain the charm of the traditional West Indian gingerbread style, whilst also featuring the highest standard of modern amenities. The Fish Pot restaurant is set in the hefty walls of the former Fort Rupert, reckoned to be the oldest building on the island. Dining takes place either right above the sand on a deck attached to the limestone walls of the fort, or in the satisfying elegance of the interior where the ancient walls are offset by white table cloths and mint green louvres of the restaurant. The Fish Pot has one of the loveliest settings on the island and over the years it has created a good following as one of the best places to eat out.

Most of the accommodation is across the road, hidden in a profusion of palms and tropical greenery. The one-bedroom suites are set in the gingerbread cottages, which stand in a line looking over the pool and to the sea. Upstairs you will find the bedroom, complete with four-poster bed, and bathroom. Downstairs one finds the sitting room and full kitchen. Both levels feature balconies surrounded by so much greenery that one is hardly exposed to the other guests as they pass by and it is well worth taking advantage of being able to order breakfast on the terrace.

There are two two-bedroom suites either side of the pool in the garden and also a 2-bedroom and a 3 bedroom suite set in the walls of Fort Rupert itself. These suites have exposed coral stone walls and, like the other rooms, are decorated with Caribbean artwork. The views though the shuttered windows give right over the beach and onto the sea. The three bedroom house has a small garden with lawn leading off the side and is ideal for people with children.

What were Caribbean hotels like before the trade winds were replaced by the blasts of air conditioning, when morning exercise was a walk on the beach and not water aerobics and when you sat watching the sunset instead of cable TV? Since architect Nick Troubetzkoy purchased the first 14 hillside units in 1974 and throughout the expansion and renovation that has followed, design in harmony with nature, complementing the island's natural beauty, has remained his focal point. The 600-acre site is a lush garden of tropical foliage bordering one of the island's best beaches, where soft silver sands dip into the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean. No two rooms at Anse Chastanet are exactly alike.
